About Talk Up

Childline 08001111It is estimated that 1 in 10 young people have lived with domestic violence in their families within the past 12 months (West Sussex Domestic Violence Strategy 2005-2008)

ChildLine receives an average of more than two calls per hour about physical abuse, every hour of the year.(ChildLine Casenotes 2006)

Domestic Abuse is not only affecting many young lives now but is also a big threat for the future when they first start entering into relationships.

In Crawley, Lorna Jones (Local Campaigns Co-ordinator) set up the Talk Up Campaign in 2008 to encourage and support education about domestic abuse in schools.

There are lesson plans and materials already available from many services in the UK but often they are hard to reach, so as part of the Talk Up Campaign this website was produced for teachers and school staff to easily access materials that can equip, resource and support them in their day-day contact with young people and with their lessons about relationships and domestic abuse.

There are three schools that are first piloting this site for us in Crawley. With them we worked out the training for teachers and staff and we also involved young people to get their input on the initiative. We achieved this scheme by working with Worthing Women’s Aid, North Sussex Women’s Refuge Project, Worth Services and also West Sussex Community Safety Team, West Sussex Healthy Schools Team and the Youth Service. All of these agencies have played a major part in creating and delivering the campaign.

Standing Together worked with the NSPCC for this campaign from September 2008. They are holding the site and through their expertise, networks and resources will be responsible for the future development and promotion of the campaign around the UK.
